Abstract

This research paper focuses on the effect of material types on the fire safety of bus transport vehicles. This has become crucial since there has been a marked increase in the number of fire accidents that result in fatalities and loss of property, worldwide. The dynamics of fire are discussed in this paper showing how fire progresses from one stage to another in a bus fire. The use of fire scenarios as a design review tool, in order to analyze fire ignition points for redesign purposes is discussed. The role of materials in the propagation of fire is also discussed, with alternative solutions suggested. The information presented in this article will be useful in educating designers in how they can include fire properties of materials in the design process. The work is also useful to policy makers to aid in forming regulations that guarantee public safety in public transport vehicles
